Fast Acting Co-Crystal Curcumin

THE NEW GENERATION OF CURCUMINOIDS

Curcumin has been called "the golden spice of life" for good reason. This bright yellow compound from turmeric root shows up in research for inflammation, joint health, liver support, cognitive health and more. But there's a significant challenge: your body struggles to absorb it.

You can swallow grams of curcumin powder and barely get any into your bloodstream. It dissolves slowly, breaks down quickly in your gut, and most of it never reaches the cell sites you want it to. This is why the supplement industry has tried everything from black pepper extract combinations, to very fancy delivery systems like the HydroCurc® in SupportMAX Joint.

Over the last decade a new approach that changes the game entirely has made significant progress: co-crystallization.

By combining curcumin with L-carnitine at the molecular level, we now have a form that your body can absorb rapidly, far more so than ever before, and to a high degree of efficiency much like HydroCurc®. This is what the new
Cocrysta® Curcumin ingredient provides.

QUICK FACTS

  • Main benefit: May help support healthy inflammatory response with significantly improved curcuminoid absorption compared to standard curcumin, both speed of uptake and total content that reaches circulation.
  • Research Highlight: In a human study comparing against C3® Curcumin + Bioperine® Piperine, Cocrysta® Curcumin dose matched at 1g had a total of 2.7x greater absorption. Previous research has demonstrated Curcumin C3 Complex® to be 20x greater absorption than curcumin alone.
  • Best for: People who want curcumin benefits, but haven't responded well to standard forms; and those seeking faster-acting inflammation support.
  • Dosage: Research in humans to date have shown 1g daily (equivalent to 600 curcuminoids) to deliver an effective quantity of curcuminoids to circulation. Each Strom Sports capsule includes 700mg, 2 capsules daily provides a potent dose.

Why Your Body Can't Absorb Regular Curcumin

When you take regular curcumin, it faces a perfect storm of absorption problems.

First, it's hydrophobic - meaning it doesn't dissolve well in water or the watery fluids in your stomach. The curcuminoid molecules stick together tightly through molecular forces called hydrogen bonds. They form stable crystal structures that resist breaking apart, which is required to enter circulation.

Second, even if some molecules separate, your small intestine is hostile territory. Curcumin gets rapidly metabolized through a process called glucuronidation - your liver enzymes attach sugar molecules to it, marking it for elimination and reducing its ability to be absorbed.

Third, what little survives gets eliminated quickly. The half-life is short, meaning it doesn't stay in your system long, this is thanks to both the glucuronidation process which continues once in circulation, but also methylation.

The supplement industry's first major breakthrough came from black pepper extract (piperine). A landmark 1998 study found that adding just 5mg of piperine to 500mg of curcumin increased peak blood levels by 30-fold and total absorption by 20-fold in humans. Piperine works by interfering with the liver enzymes that cause glucuronidation and methylation, but this doesn't solve the primary issue of the tight bonding forces between curcuminoids limiting their separation and uptake in the first place. Piperine also affects the metabolism of many drugs and compounds, not just curcumin. It's a broad-spectrum metabolic inhibitor.

Co-Crystallization: A Molecular Solution

Co-crystallization is exactly what it sounds like: creating a new crystal structure that combines two different molecules.

CUR-L-CN ( Curcumin-L-Carnitine co-crystal) combines curcumin with L-carnitine in a 60:40 ratio. During production, the molecules are mechanically milled together using liquid-assisted grinding. This isn't just mixing - it breaks old bonds and creates completely new molecular bonds between the Curcuminoids and L-Carnitines.

The crystal structure analysis reveals why this works so well. In regular curcumin crystals, curcuminoid molecules bind tightly to each other through oxygen-hydrogen bonds. But in the co-crystal, curcumin molecules are separated by L-carnitine molecules, acting as spacers.

The molecular forces between curcumin and L-carnitine are weaker than curcuminoid-to-curcuminoid bonds. This means the co-crystal falls apart much more easily when it hits stomach acid.

You can actually see this difference. Pure curcumin is bright yellow powder. L-carnitine is white crystals. But when you co-crystallize them, the material turns red - visual proof that a new molecular structure has formed. This is why Cocrysta® Curcumin looks so different.

Human Trial Comparing to CURCUMIN + PIPERINE

Scientists tested a commercial product (Curcumin C3 Complex®) containing curcumin plus Bioperine (a patented piperine extract). When compared head-to-head in 12 healthy men:

- CUR-L-CN achieved 2.8x higher peak levels than curcumin-plus-piperine
- CUR-L-CN showed 2.7x higher total absorption than curcumin-plus-piperine

This suggests the co-crystal approach easily outperforms piperine-enhanced curcuminoids.

Preliminary observations in 5 people with chronic inflammation found that 1.3g daily of CUR-L-CN produced comparable subjective effects to 1g of HydroCurc
® (another enhanced-absorption curcumin form) in a commercial joint support product.

Why L-Carnitine Makes Sense as a Partner

L-carnitine isn't just a random spacer molecule. It brings its own benefits that complement curcumin. L-carnitine is an endogenous compound - your body makes it naturally, and it has a well established safety profile. It plays a crucial role in fat metabolism by transporting fatty acids into mitochondria (the energy factories of your cells) where they can be burned for fuel.

Dissolution Speed: The Key to Better Absorption

Laboratory dissolution testing reveals why CUR-L-CN works so much better. In simulated gastric fluid (mimicking stomach acid), CUR-L-CN dissolved rapidly and reached maximum concentration in 20 minutes. Regular curcumin dissolved much more slowly, continuing to increase over 180 minutes.

Maximum solubility values:
- CUR-L-CN in stomach fluid: 74.2 μg/mL
- Regular curcumin in stomach fluid: 48.2 μg/mL
That's 1.5 times higher apparent solubility for the co-crystal curcumin.

In simulated intestinal fluid (higher pH, like your small intestine), the difference was even larger:
- CUR-L-CN: 45.2 μg/mL
- Regular curcumin: 24.5 μg/mL
The co-crystal showed 1.8 times higher solubility in intestinal conditions.

Practical Usage Guide

Dosing: Human research to date has been performed at 1g dosing which demonstrated ability to reach a meaningful concentration in circulation. Since CUR-L-CN is 60% curcuminoids, this provides 600mg of actual curcuminoid.
For our Strom Sports product, each capsule has 700mg co-crystal curcumin, we have found dosing at 1-2 capsules daily to provide noticeable benefit.

Timing: The rapid gastric absorption suggests taking it on an empty stomach might maximize uptake, though this hasn't been specifically studied. Some people may prefer taking it with a small amount of food to minimize any potential stomach irritation.

Fat intake: While the co-crystal dissolves in aqueous fluids, taking it with a meal containing some dietary fat may further optimize absorption of this fat-soluble compound.

Consistency matters: Like most compounds affecting inflammation pathways, regular daily use produces better results than occasional dosing. The relatively short half-life means curcumin doesn't accumulate substantially in your body.

F.A.Q.

Q: How does this compare to HydroCurc® or other premium curcumin forms?
A: Our testing in a group of 6 athletes with chronic inflammation problems found 1.3g of cocrystal curcumin produces effects comparable to SupportMAX Joint for inflammation - which uses 1g HydroCurc®.  Note this is small sample anecdotal data, none of the participants were informed of expectation or what the specific curcumin type it was. Head-to-head comparison studies would be needed for definitive answers, but based on existing research on both we can expect them to have similar performance. Right now we do intend to keep HydroCurc® in SupportMAX Joint because it has demonstrated its effectiveness over the years of use and has a more established body of research. Both are good, each has their own pros and cons.

As discussed in sections above,
Cocrysta® Curcumin was directly compared with Curcumin C3 Complex in a cross over trial and significantly outperformed it in blood curcuminoid levels.

Q: Why does the co-crystal turn red instead of staying yellow like regular curcumin?
A: The color change from yellow to red indicates formation of new molecular bonds between curcumin and L-carnitine. This isn't degradation - it's confirmation that co-crystallization occurred. The red color is a characteristic of the curcumin molecule in a different chemical environment created by the crystal structure.

Q: Can I just take curcumin and L-carnitine separately?
A: No, simply mixing the two won't work. The co-crystallization process creates a specific molecular lattice structure where L-carnitine molecules act as spacers between curcumin molecules. This requires mechanical milling with precise conditions to form the new crystal structure. Taking them separately means curcumin remains in its poorly-absorbed form.

Q: Why is Co-crystal Curcumin "Fast acting" compared to other curcumins?
A: Generally yes, for several reasons. The key reason co-crystal curcumin has better absorption is because the individual curcuminoid molecules can separate much easier to allow uptake. So easily that it can do so in the stomach, while the majority of plain curcuminoid absorption will be in the small intestine. Because its absorbs in the stomach it can get the curcuminoids into circulation for use faster

Faster absorption means the compound spends less time in your digestive tract where it can be broken down by enzymes. The gastric absorption, which avoids the heavy metabolic activity of the small intestine. For acute uses (like taking it before exercise or an activity where you want inflammation support), faster absorption means it's easier to plan dosing according to peak activity goals.
